Although our School within a College (SWAC) programs are currently on hold at Georgian College, we wanted to continue to share some of our student accomplishments.
Emily Keith came to the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic DSB SWAC program in Barrie because she was struggling with some health issues that made attendance at her high school challenging. She also felt she didn’t fit in at high school, but that all changed when she joined SWAC this past September.
“SWAC provides students an opportunity to learn and grow in an environment where for once we can be proud and celebrate our differences,” Emily says. “Dual credit has given me the opportunity to excel in a different environment. It has given me confidence in anything that I set my mind to and has allowed me to feel pride in myself”.
All SWAC students take at least one college course each semester. Emily’s class was studying Culture and Cuisine with faculty member Jesse Dietsche before the break, which included sampling and making some unfamiliar but delicious food.
The SWAC program, which runs on five campuses, includes a free OCAS application for students. Emily says she feels prepared for post-secondary now, with a focus on psychology and a career helping others.
