Eighteen-year-old Samantha Todd took her first dual credit in the fall of 2016. She says studying Sustainable Materials, Finishes and Furnishings from the Interior Decorating program turned out to be a great choice.
“This was a great experience for me where I got both a high school credit and college credit, and now I’m closer to graduation which means I will be able to graduate this year,” she explains. “Due to anxiety and depression, I did not attend my high school regularly and fell behind in my courses. It wasn’t the right environment for me, especially in grade 11, I had some catching up to do. SWAC and taking the Dual Credit helped me get closer to graduation”.
SWAC stands for School within a College. Sam and her classmates came to the Barrie campus of Georgian College to take both their secondary credits and college credits, which count towards her high school diploma. It has made a big difference in her life and her perspective. “I have a way better outlook on school and much happier to attend, and the teachers are way nicer,” she says.
