If at first you don’t succeed….
Christopher Hiscock learned about dual credits when he was attending the Angus Alternative School. He was excited about the opportunity to take a college credit that would count towards his secondary diploma. But the first course he chose didn’t suit him, and he dropped out.
But Christopher didn’t give up. With a passion for cooking in the kitchen with his mother, he decided to try Basic Baking and Pastry Skills with Chef Bonnie McQueen. This course from the Georgian Culinary programs was a much better fit.
“I love doing hands on tasks, I also love to learn new things,” Christopher says. “I love working as a team member, and making many smile.”
The course has solidified Christopher’s career choice as well. “Being a cook, chef or even a baker when I am older is something I would want to do in the future,” he says. “This class has taught me new things and has been a huge eye opener towards my future job. Without this course, I wouldn’t know exactly what I would want to do.”
All dual credit courses include a secondary teacher there to support students as they transition to post-secondary expectations. Brent Roy, Christopher’s teacher saw growth in his student over the 14 week course.
“Chris struggled in mainstream programs in high school,” commented Roy. “This kind of format has allowed him to excel, gain confidence and further support his decision to attend post-secondary at Georgian College.”
Secondary students interested in dual credit courses that begin in February should talk to their school’s guidance or student success teacher.
